Typical prices
These are typical ranges for Basingstoke in 2026. Your installer gives you a fixed price after a free survey, so the number you agree is the number you pay.
| Item | Typical cost | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Smart 7kW charger, supplied and fitted | £850–£1,200 | Standard install, parking close to the house, up to about 10m of cable |
| Extra cable run | £15–£30 per m | Parking further from the fuse board |
| Consumer unit upgrade | £450–£750 | Old fuse board, no spare way, or missing RCD protection |
| Earth rod / earthing upgrade | £100–£250 | Some chargers on some supplies need a separate earth |
| Trenching or ducting | £40–£100 per m | Cable buried across a lawn or drive |
| Looped supply split (SSEN) | Usually free | Your supply is shared with a neighbour |
| Tethered instead of socket | +£50–£100 | You want the cable built into the charger |
Guide prices, not offers. Final prices depend on your property and are set by the installer after the survey.
What's included in a standard install
- A smart charger from Ohme, Hypervolt, zappi, Easee, Pod Point or Tesla
- A dedicated circuit from your consumer unit with the right RCD and overload protection
- Up to about 10m of armoured or twin and earth cable, clipped neatly to the wall
- PEN-fault protection, built into the charger or added as a device
- Full testing and an electrical installation certificate
- SSEN notification and app setup, including your off-peak tariff
What pushes the price up
Distance and route
Cable is cheap. Labour to route it neatly through walls, garages and lofts is where the cost goes. A charger on the wall right behind the fuse board is the cheapest job there is.
An older fuse board
Many Basingstoke homes built in the 1970s and 80s still have their original consumer unit. If there's no spare way or the protection isn't up to the current regulations, it needs replacing first. See consumer unit and earthing upgrades.
Your supply
A looped supply or a 60A main fuse can mean SSEN has to do work first. It's usually free, but it adds a few weeks. See looped supply and main fuse upgrades.
How to keep the cost down
- WhatsApp photos of your fuse board, meter and parking spot to 07719 747247. Accurate quotes, no surprises.
- Mount the charger as close to the fuse board as is practical.
- If you rent or own a flat, check the OZEV grant: up to £500 off.
- Pick a charger that works with your tariff. The fuel savings dwarf a £100 difference in hardware.
Common questions
Is the charger included in the price?
Yes. The typical £850 to £1,200 range includes a smart charger. If you've already bought one, installation-only prices are lower.
Are there running costs?
No subscription is needed. On an overnight EV tariff, a full charge for a typical family EV usually costs a few pounds.
Can I get a grant as a homeowner?
Not if you own a house with a driveway. That grant ended in 2022. Renters, flat owners and landlords can still claim up to £500.
Why are online prices lower?
Some national firms advertise a base price that only covers the simplest job and charge for anything extra. A fixed quote after a survey avoids that.
